Once ordinary pheasant was a game which was served to an imperial table. Today this dish became much more available as grow up a pheasant and in farms. This bird has several names including "the Caucasian pheasant". Initially these birds were found only in Central Asia, but from there they gradually extended to a set of other countries, including modern Russia, Ukraine, the countries of Southeast Asia. In Georgia the pheasant is considered one of national symbols.
It is interesting that pheasants were cultivated many centuries back. And though today at us they are associated with Georgia, Greeks began to cultivate them. The name "pheasant" happens from the Greek city the Phase located in the east of the country. Several millennia ago it was brisk shopping center. There brought also the pheasants delivered from Georgia. The legend says that pheasants to this city were brought by Argonauts when went to a way behind the Golden Fleece.
It is necessary to begin the description of this bird with the fact that she differs very beautiful, most often in color plumage and a long tail. She attracts with it birds of prey. Though only males differ in bright plumage, and females look much less attractive. The male has to battle in case of danger or distract attention. But, being excellent runners, often pheasants run. If the danger inevitably comes nearer, they do attempt to fly up. It makes related them both with quails, and with partridges. Sometimes such behavior is characteristic also of other inhabitants of the hen house.
The ordinary pheasant cannot brag of the impressive sizes. It and is not so important for appearance of a bird. Evolution led to the fact that pheasants need to look for independently a shelter, having hidden as it is possible closer to the earth therefore they will often hide. The weight of one bird can be up to 2 kg, and it concerns both males, and females. And other sizes at them approximately identical – length of a trunk is to 90 cm. At females the tail short, and here at males – is at least 60 cm longer, and sometimes more. In it they remind not less magnificent peacocks.
All in the nature about 30 subspecies of these birds meet. they Differ generally in the color and some details of shape. For example, the Transcaucasian pheasant is considered one of the most beautiful subspecies. Such birds differ in red and gold plumage, but on the head, a breast and a neck it casts violet. Paws and a beak of such bird differ in yellow color at a male, and gray – at a female. And here North Caucasian differs from it absolutely slightly – lighter feathers.
Very beautifully the Manchurian pheasant with "collar" of white color looks, it will not turn out to pass by the Tajik pheasant with green-black feathers around a breast and a craw, but at the same time with red-yellow feathers on a back. The Khivan pheasant differs in copper-colored feathers.
At chicken farming not only their external characteristics are important, but also how they behave in the habitat. For a pheasant the best housing is the thickets located near a source of fresh water. Sometimes these birds can be found also on fields, but there for them after all few natural shelters. These birds like to take refuge in thickets in the afternoon, in the summer they do it in the heat of a heat, and behind a forage leave only in the morning and in the evening. Spends the night an ordinary pheasant in the same thickets.
The ability to run across quickly enough directly on the ground is characteristic of a pheasant, and such birds seldom here fly up. At the same time males sharp-sightedly watch the territory not to let there strangers. Many defend the earth to death.
Before spring of a bird separately live in same-sex flocks. And in the nature one such pack can consist of one hundred males. And here females form smaller "social groups". Literally with approach of spring males at first separate from pack, then choose to themselves "girlfriend", attracting attention the singing (though quite loud, but hoarse and dissonant). Then "married couples" suit a nest in which the female will hatch out eggs in a grass. The male in this process of participation does not accept. In a month from eggs baby birds – sometimes to two tens are born.
It is interesting that pheasants are the birds inclined to a stress. That is they can worry so strongly that it will affect a condition of their health and reproductive opportunities. And the ordinary pheasant can worry even because of sharp sounds and movements.
These birds are grown up not because of their appearance though they also are beautiful, and because of meat, which more tasty, and more usefully, than chicken. And eggs of pheasants are considered as more dietary.
For cultivation it is necessary to buy couple of heterosexual birds. Many want to save and get a bird independently. It is, of course, quite good option, but only if it is rather good to know pheasant habits, to be rather dexterous and to be able to track down him. Therefore most often to steam of pheasants buy on specialized farm. It is more practical option as it is so possible to be sure that birds are healthy and grew in good conditions.
It is possible to buy eggs of pheasants – about ten, it is not less. But at the same time it is necessary to remember that for cultivation from eggs the qualitative and reliable incubator is necessary, and it costs money even if to lease it.
At cultivation of these birds it is necessary to study carefully all their features that from the very beginning everything could be made by rules. requires Great attention also a diet of these birds. Though more important role in it is played by grain crops, these birds love also Colorado beetles so with their help it is possible to save a harvest from invasion of these wreckers (but only it concerns that potato for which cultivation toxic chemicals were not used).
The Caucasian pheasant requires the open-air cage. It can be arranged independently, it is only correct to calculate the sizes. Everything depends on a livestock of birds. Allocate about 1 m for one pheasant ². On perimeter it is recommended to plant the small size bushes or the trudging plants – they will remind the wild nature.
The pheasants enclosure represents a framework from metal (and is more often – from a tree), on which fix a grid. The form of the open-air cage can be any, but it is the simplest to arrange a rectangular design. The matter is that the open-air cage is also covered from above with a grid that birds did not scatter and to create such "roof" for a rectangular design much more simply. If there are many birds and males more than two, then the open-air cage should be divided into several sections.
In the open-air cage it is recommended to do a canopy that birds could take cover from bad weather. If it is a little birds, then from wooden boards it is possible to hammer together similarity of a lodge on a case of bad weather and cold weather.
For the open-air cage it is necessary to pick up the place correctly. recommends to choose the site with sandy soil. Theoretically the soil can be and clay. But then it will be necessary to fill up it with sand or gravel evenly.
In the wild nature the Caucasian pheasant eats berries, grains and roots of some plants. Worms, insects and their larvae and even mollusks also enter its diet. Birds get livelihood independently, digging out a forage paws (if it is about worms) or pecking berries directly from branches. At the same time it is necessary to strew "floor" in the open-air cage with small pebble or sand to ensure to birds normal functioning of a digestive tract. The matter is that under natural conditions they constantly peck a little sand or pebbles. But only adult individuals act this way, for baby birds on the first place there has to be a vegetable food.
In bondage of a pheasant feed with various grain sterns - it is both barley, and a millet, and corn, and peas, and wheat. Periodically it is possible to include all those products in their diet that owners eat: fruit, vegetables, there are a little cottage cheese or meat.
In usual conditions each adult individual in day has to eat about 80 g of a forage, and during a marriage season – it is even more.
