Initially spaniels as it is possible to judge by the name, appeared in solar Spain. Knights crusaders, inveterate birds and rabbits hunters were owners, generally. However archeologists consider that they even before spaniels parted in Asia Minor from where they also got to Europe.

is not known precisely when spaniels arrived in England. However British could not ignore the talented hunter. Having extended over the country, representatives of breed began to differ among themselves and received different names. There is an opinion that once in the Foggy Albion there were more than 20 kinds of spaniels!

1697. And in the middle of 19 century they were recognized as full-fledged breed.
When breed got to America, local manufacturers decided to create "modification" of breed.
the American cocker spaniel is less than English, wool at it is more plentiful and though it occurred from the English ancestors, breeding work in the USA was conducted in a bit different direction. Elegant "trousers" and long wool — the most important distinctive signs of the American cockers.
Breed was for the first time presented in Manchester, the State of New Hampshire (USA) in September, 1883 and when the American club of dog breeding allowed to use two separate rings for two kinds of cockers, American at once became extremely popular.
From the point of view of the hunter, a cocker spaniel — a dog for all occasions. Last century of representatives of breed used on hunting for woodcocks. Then to the name "spaniel" (in Celtic span – a rabbit) also the word a cocker increased (from the English woodcock — a forest rooster, that is a woodcock).
Now this breed — one of the most popular around the world, and especially — in the homeland, in the USA. Generally these dogs are kept in quality decorative though they did not lose hunting qualities.
