On a photo: shih-tzu. Photo:
Short history of breed: People often confuse апсо and a shih-tzu, but in fact there is a number of essential differences. Roots of this breed from Tibet, but it developed in China where similar dogs lived in imperial palaces. China became the republic in 1912 then some individuals got on the West though the first registered import cases in Britain were not till 1931. The breed was recognized as independent in 1934, and in 1940 was registered Kennel Klubom, with assignment of champion certificates since 1949. At a shih-tzu very lovely muzzle reminding a chrysanthemum this effect is created by wool on the back of a nose growing up.
General view: Strong, magnificently dressed (but it is not excessive) a dog with haughty expression and the muzzle reminding a chrysanthemum.
Important proportions: The distance between withers and the basis of a tail is more, than height in withers.
Behavior/temperament: Clever, active and attentive. Friendly and independent dog.
Head: Large, roundish, wide, widely placed eyes. On the head a shock from wool, a long beard and moustaches, on a nose – the wool growing up which creates effect of a chrysanthemum. Does not prevent a dog to see.
Transition from a forehead to a muzzle: Expressed.
Nose: Black, but dark brown at brown and with brown spots of dogs. The tip of a lobe of a nose has to be on one line or edges of a lower eyelid of an eye are slightly lower. Nose back direct or slightly snub-nosed. Widely open nostrils. The lowered lobe of a nose is extremely undesirable, also as well as the narrowed nostrils.
Muzzle: Rather wide, square, short, without wrinkles, flat and covered with wool. Length is about 2.5 cm from a nose tip to stop. Pigmentation of a muzzle continuous, as far as possible.
Lips: Not crude.
Jaws/teeth: Jaws are wide, small having a snack or a direct bite (a tick-borne bite, edge to the region).
Eyes: Large, dark, roundish, not convex, rather widely placed. With warm expression. At brown or with brown spots of dogs lighter eyes are admissible. Whites of the eyes are not visible.
Ears: Large, with a long ear cloth, trailing. Tops are put slightly below, plentifully covered with the decorating hair so merge with wool on a neck.
Neck: Proportional, beautifully curved. Sufficient length that it is proud to hold the head.
Case: The distance between withers and the basis of a tail is more, than height in withers.
Back: Straight line.
Waist: Good coupling, strong.
Breast: Wide and deep and well lowered.
Tail: Magnificently dressed, keeps cheerfully zakinuty on a back. It is highly put. In height approximately at the level of a skull that gives to a dog the balanced look.
Shoulders: Strong, inclined back.
Forearms: Legs short and brawny with good frame, straight lines as far as possible, will be coordinated with the wide, well lowered breast.
Forepaws: Roundish, strong and plentifully covered with wool.
General view: Legs short and brawny with good frame. Straight lines at survey behind.
Hips: Roundish and brawny.
Hinder legs: Roundish, strong, with good small pillows. Are plentifully covered with wool.
Movements: Haughty, plavnotekushchy, front legs with a good vymakh forward, a strong push of hind legs, small pillows of paws are completely visible.
Structure: An integumentary hair long, dense, not curly, with a moderate underfur, not fluffy. The easy wave is allowed. Wool does not prevent a dog to see. Length of wool should not limit movements.
Color: Any colors are resolved, a white mark on a forehead and a white tip of a tail at spotty colors are very desirable.
Size and weight: Height in withers: no more than 27 cm. The type and characteristic features of breed are the most important and should not be sacrificed for the sake of the size. Weight: from 4.5 to 8.1 kg. Ideal weight is 4.5-7.5 kg.
Shortcomings: Any deviation from the above points has to be considered as a shortcoming and to be punished in proportion to degree of expressiveness and influence on health and wellbeing of a dog.
The disqualifying defects:
— Aggression or cowardice.
— Any dog with physical or mental anomalies has to be disqualified.
Note: Dogs have to have two developed testicles completely lowered in a scrotum.
