SHORT HISTORY of BREED:

Many centuries ago development of navigation and navigation in the Mediterranean led to active exchange of cultural, scientific and other values between the western and east people. This relationship, mainly, of commercial character, promoted also exchange of pets among whom the place of honor was taken by the sentry and security dogs used in port and coastal settlements for protection against pirates and robbers. Special preference was given to large, powerful dogs with the big head and strong teeth. These dogs represented breed of mastiffs from the Iberian peninsula and were widely used in the territory of Spain as hunting and fighting dogs (for battle both with other dogs, and with bulls). They accompanied the king Jacob 1 in his aggressive campaigns and thus in 1230 got to Balearic Islands. In the 17th century the Utrecht agreement under which the island of Menorka and other territories departed in possession of Great Britain was accepted. British brought own combative and sentry dogs to Balearic Islands and crossed them to the Iberian mastiffs who by then were also inhabiting these islands. At the beginning of the 18th century the bullfight became fashionable, and there was a need for an etching dog. The British living on these islands began to look for the breed of dog capable to battle against bulls. The name of a dog "бо" — a bull dog is explained by this ability. The breed is mentioned in the Spanish breeding book in 1923, but the first official record was made several years later – in 1928 and 1929, after exhibiting of breed at an exhibition of dogs in Barcelona.
