In the northern region of Estonia found the most ancient eye of an animal in the world which in the building and degree of structure is similar to visual body modern pcheloobrazny and dragonflies. By results of a research it was revealed that it belonged to a trilobit, and the age of a fossilized find exceeds 500 million years. Preliminary data say that the found eye can be the most ancient of those which were recently.

In Estonia the Most Ancient Eye of an Animal in the World Is Found

of Feature of an unusual find

Researches were conducted by the European scientists who managed to find in Estonia the most ancient eye of an animal in the world. On the structure the unusual find reminds the structure of complex facet visual body which is possessed now by modern dragonflies, bees and other insects and also cancroid animals.

The Trilobit Possessed an Organ of Vision

The conducted researches allowed to determine the approximate age of the hardened remains, making about 530 million years .

Possessed an organ of vision to a trilobit — the disappeared species of invertebrates living earlier in the seas and living in the period of the Paleozoic. In addition, scientists found younger remains relating to a cambrian era.

Surrounded a body of ancient arthropods strong protective and basic structure (armor) which easily remains till our times in the form of fossils. Thanks to it modern biologists managed to find and define more of 10 thousand kinds of the died-out invertebrates .

the Structure of the found eye

The hardened remains of the animal who died out many centuries ago were found near the settlement of Saviranna that is on the coast of the Gulf of Finland. After studying of fossils by the scientist managed to find out that:

The Hardened Remains of the Animal Who Died Out Many Centuries Ago

  • trilobit had a direct bearing on a type of Schmidtiellus reetae;
  • the animal had belonging to Redlichiida group;
  • the found look was the most primitive;
  • fossilized remains have about hundred structural units of which the facet eye grid consists;
  • ommatidiya possess a free location and "are not chained" in an eye;
  • ommatidiya has an external lens crystalline lens and adjacent cone-shaped body;
  • the lens which is located outside hides for itself visual cages which are integrated around a rabdom (a visual tubule);
  • rabdy consists of tiny fibers.

Ancient Remains of Trilobit

From the words of researchers, the visual body of an animal has the simple building that distinguishes them from modern nasekomoobrazny and cancroid. At the same time the sight of the trilobit was quite weak.

Eye lenses had the flat curved form because of what they badly refracted light.

Despite this, most ancient arthropod was able to leave quickly from predatory animals . Results of researches can be seen in the scientific magazine Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
