Observation of behavior of animals – not only pleasure, but also need.

Why it is so important to watch behavior of animals?

The matter is that the behavior of animals is the first that shows us as the living being reacts to these or those changes in life.

For this reason scientists devote to observation of animals much time, it is the useful and not invasive way to estimate their wellbeing. However the conclusions drawn on the basis of observations sometimes are fraught with problems as people are inclined to to anthropomorphism , that is to attributing by an animal of human feelings and ways of response to the world around. And animals not always react to surrounding as well as we.

For example, many owners are convinced that dogs test sense of guilt only because at the same time the dog behaves as the person knowing that he made something not that would conduct. But such behavior of dogs – sign not of repentance, and fear.

Each animal reacts to the world around in own way. And if we want to make pets happy, it is important to learn to see the world from their point of view. For this purpose scientists developed a set of methods of assessment of behavior of animals.

One of rather simple methods – drawing up etogramma when the observer carefully fixes any manifestations of behavior of animals, their detailed description and duration. And then these records are compared when animals are placed in different conditions.

For example, it is known that the horse under natural conditions about 16 hours a day roams and is grazed, but if to lock her to the stall on day and night, she will not be able to show this behavior. And the lack of a similar opportunity can become the reason of konyushenny defects .

It is important to watch animals under natural conditions – such observations give valuable information on how the behavior can arise in response to presentation of these or those incentives. For example, about 30 years ago professor of David Wood-Gush and its students placed ordinary domestic pigs in the conditions close to natural, and found out that pigs … build the real nests of a grass for a dream and for the birth of pigs! Alas, in the conditions of the majority of farms these animals were at that time deprived of such opportunity.

just it is Enough to watch animals?

But whether enough observations of this sort to judge whether is happy our pet and whether his requirements are satisfied ? Unfortunately, observation has restriction: we see behavior of animals, but we cannot often understand why animals arrive anyway.

Besides, we know that the behavior of an animal depends on conditions and on any existence of opportunities. And to understand more how animals perceive this world, we should get into their way of thinking more deeply.

And here any tests come to the rescue . For example, in what animals are offered to make a choice. These tests help to understand what is pleasant to this or that animals and what they avoid.

However and these tests have restrictions: animals can choose only from those options which were offered by the experimenter. And from where to us the nobility whether this choice really is "best" or only "the smallest evil"? Besides, the choice is influenced also by other factors, for example, the air temperature, age and a sex of an animal, etc.

And here motivational tests come to the rescue of . The sense is in giving to an animal several opportunities and to look for what of them it agrees "to pay" — for example, to press the lever to receive this or that forage. The more actively the animal will press the lever with concrete food (in the presence of the choice), the more, therefore, this delicacy is pleasant to it. It helps to understand that it is really important for animals.

Results of observations and researches can be used for change of the legislation in the sphere of wellbeing of animals, but they are also useful to representatives of the industry connected with animals and to the organizations helping "dumb animals". And, certainly, all this gives us the chance to see the world from the point of view of those for whom we care.
