When we tell

about training of dogs, most often remember a method of "carrot and stick", that is punishment and a reinforcement. At the same time for some reason many consider that punishment is much more effective than a reinforcement. But in fact the contrary is the case. And that is why.

Why the reinforcement is more effective than punishment in training of dogs?

The dog learns the world and studies new by practical consideration, trying and making mistakes, learning from them lessons, studying what behavior will yield the necessary result – satisfaction of requirement. Also can face two results of the actions: reinforcement or punishment.

Punishment is when the dog receives what she does not want as a result of the actions.

The reinforcement is a partial or full satisfaction of requirement, that is what the dog wants to receive at present. So, actions which resulted in such result are effective, and probability that they will repeat, sharply increases.

Dogs want to receive the desirable in the fastest and easy way. And, gaining experience, develop and introduce the most effective solutions in life.

For example, the dog needs your attention. And she already established by a trial and error method that if she just looks to you in eyes, the chance to receive attention is minimum, and here if полаять, it strongly increases. And if to begin to chew a thing expensive to your heart … Then not only at once there will be an attention, but also the fascinating game "catch up and take away!" guess from three times what will be done by a dog when next time very much it wants it your attention?

Unfortunately, in our society to people since the childhood hammer into the head that the mistake is something unworthy. Mistakes dirty the red handle in notebooks, mercilessly criticize and give bad notes. But the mistake is a part of experience without which not to do!

And to owners it is important to remember that the mistake is a key to search of effective solutions in training of dogs. So if at you or at a dog something "is not glued" is not an occasion to lower hands and to punish a dog, and an occasion to include creative thinking and to think up a way to overcome difficulty.

Remember the obligatory study at school. Not only that you have no choice whether to go there, but if besides the teacher went on a class, trying to discover mistakes for which shouted, put the two, threatened to call parents or struck a ruler a bargain – you loved such occupations? Whether you wanted to think and propose new solutions? Whether you loved this subject? And vice versa – if lessons were cheerful and interesting, and the initiative was encouraged – unless they were not more effective, did not induce to think and offer new? And why you think that at dogs all in a different way?

The most effective training of dogs happens in games. So training has to become rather a game by rules, but not mushtry with the tough bans on any behavior which is beyond your order.

Yes, punishment can be effective to disaccustom a dog to some actions (but will never teach anything new!) However at the same time it is necessary to consider that punishment has the mass of side effects.

Side effects of punishment in training of a dog

  1. Punishment does not satisfy requirement! And even if it will stop any actions of a dog, she will just look for other way (or other time) to satisfy the requirement. For example, if to punish a dog when she steals food from a table, to it it will be terrible, but the feeling of hunger from it will not get to anywhere. And she will just wait for the moment when you are not nearby.
  2. That is punishment frightens, but does not learn to behave acceptable.
  3. Punishment destroys contact between the owner and a dog.
  4. the Dog has a chronic stress therefore behavioural problems are aggravated and/or there are problems with health.

And if the situation is so whether it is worth using doubtful methods?

Certainly, nobody argues with the fact that it is necessary to establish reasonable borders, and the discipline is important. But in most cases is much more effective to prevent "bad" behavior – it will help how to avoid punishment, not to allow a dog to gain harmful experience. For example, if the speech about aggression, it is worth until the problem is solved, using a muzzle. If the dog runs away – drive her on a lead until it becomes rather reliable. Yes, it demands time and efforts, but, as a rule, the result is worth it.

The reinforcement, unlike punishment, satisfies need of a dog , so, gives it the necessary and useful experience and leads to the fact that the desirable behavior is shown even more often.

Advantages of a reinforcement in training of a dog

  1. the Reinforcement in training of dogs is more effective than punishment as allows to satisfy requirement .
  2. The reinforcement gives to a dog useful experience and sets desirable behavior.
  3. the Skill is acquired by stronger .
  4. The contact with the owner becomes stronger.

Is it worth neglecting so obvious advantages?

Without saying it that power methods work not with all dogs: some in reply become isolated or show aggression. And the mistake price is much higher here! Why to risk and subject also a dog, and itself to an unnecessary stress?

Punishment "gives" to a dog motivation of avoiding which is connected with discomfort and fear, and forms the learned helplessness. The reinforcement motivates a dog on achievements, result here – comfort and enthusiasm in study.

The question is in what is preferred personally by you.
